Physical Therapy for Running Injuries
Get Back in the Race
If you’re suffering from a running injury, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that more than 50% of regular runners are injured each year. Capital Area PT specializes in the treatment of running-related injuries and can help you get back to pounding the pavement without the pain. Our physical therapists offer comprehensive rehabilitation programs, including injury assessment and diagnosis, hands-on manual therapy, pain management, education on proper form and taping techniques, and sport-specific stretching and strengthening exercises.
Common Running Injuries
Running is a high-impact, repetitive activity that can wreak havoc on the joints, muscles and ligaments of the lower body. Although our physical therapists occasionally treat injuries from a fall, the majority of running injuries are the result of overuse. Approximately 40% of running injuries involve the knees, however, the feet, ankles, Achilles tendon, IT band, hips, calf and thigh muscles are also frequently affected. Common running injuries include:
- Runner’s Knee
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Achilles Tendinitis
- Shin Splints
- IT Band Syndrome
- Muscle Strains
- Ankle Sprains
- Hip Pain (Bursitis)
- Stress Fractures
- Back Pain
Physical Therapy for Running Injuries
Our physical therapists provide customized, hands-on rehabilitation for running injuries based on the type of injury and the individual. In every case, our goal is to reduce pain and restore strength and mobility so you can safely return to running and prevent future injuries.
After your initial evaluation, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan. Our running injury rehabilitation programs typically include a combination of hands-on manual therapy to reposition and manipulate the affected joints and muscles, specialized treatments, such as ultrasound and electrical stimulation, and running-specific strengthening, stretching and conditioning exercises.
We also provide instruction on taping or bracing, when applicable, and include education on proper running form, shoe selection, and cross-training options to reduce the risk of future injuries.
