Spinal Stenosis Physical Therapy Treatments
Have you recently been experiencing back pain? You are not alone! It is estimated that up to 80% of the population will experience back pain at some point during their lifetime. There are many different causes that can contribute to back pain, with spinal stenosis being one of them.
What is Spinal Stenosis?
Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spaces within the spine, most often occurring in the lower back and the neck. The narrowing of the spinal column will begin to cause compression of the spinal cord with symptom severity depending on the location of the stenosis as well as the nerves that are affected:
- In the neck (cervical spinal stenosis)
- Numbness, tingling, and/or weakness in one or both arms and legs.
- Neck pain may or may not be present
- In the low back (lumbar spinal stenosis)
- Numbness, tingling, and/or weakness in the low back and one or both legs
- Difficulty with prolonged standing and walking
The most common causes of spinal stenosis include the normal aging process, osteoarthritis, as well as spinal injuries, diseases of the bone, and spinal tumors.
Why Physical Therapy as a Treatment Approach?
Physical therapy can be a conservative treatment approach to help you get back to participating in your daily tasks and performing the activities you enjoy! Your physical therapists will develop a unique, individualized treatment program based on their examination findings and your own personal goals. Some components that your program may include are:
- Stretching and range of motion exercises
- Strengthening exercises
- Aerobic exercise
- Manual therapy such as massage
- Postural education
