mckenzie method

At Capital Area Physical Therapy, we use a variety of treatments and techniques to help patients decrease pain, improve function, and reach their goals. One of the methodologies we follow is the McKenzie Method® of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT).

Backed by years of research, evidence and clinical practice, the McKenzie Method focuses on identifying and treating the mechanical cause of pain through active exercises, postural corrections, and patient empowerment.

How Does the McKenzie Method Work?

The McKenzie Method involves a thorough assessment to understand the underlying mechanics of your pain, and classifies your condition based on how your symptoms respond to repeated movements and positions. Upon completing the assessment and classification, your physical therapist develops a personalized treatment plan – involving active exercises, stretches and/or postural corrections – and provides you with the knowledge and skills to manage your condition independently.

  • Assessment – A physical therapist conducts a detailed assessment to understand the mechanics of your pain and how your symptoms respond to repeated movements and positions.
  • Classification – Your condition is classified into one of four categories: Derangement Syndrome (internal disruption or displacement), Dysfunction Syndrome (end-range pain from structurally impaired tissues), Postural Syndrome (pain from prolonged overload of normal tissues) or Other.
  • Treatment – Your physical therapist prescribes specific exercises, stretches and/or postural corrections based on your syndrome classification and individual symptoms.
  • Self-Empowerment – You are given the knowledge and skills to manage your condition independently through self-management techniques.

What Conditions Can the McKenzie Method Treat?

The McKenzie Method can treat both acute and chronic conditions of the spine and extremities, including:
