Whether you play pickleball or professional sports, getting sidelined with an injury is tough mentally and physically. At Capital Area Physical Therapy, our goal is to get you back to doing the activities you enjoy as soon as possible. However, returning to sports before you are ready has consequences, like higher reinjury rates, chronic instability and long-term joint damage.

To help you safely return to sports after an injury, our sports physical therapists carefully evaluate your healing progress and recommend a gradual, staged approach to full activity.

Signs You are Ready to Return to Sports

Determining the right time to resume sports requires careful evaluation of your healing progress, strength, stability and sport-specific readiness.

  • No Pain – You no longer feel sharp pain or lasting soreness during or after activity.
  • No Swelling – The injured area does not swell up after activity.
  • Full Range of Motion – You are able to bend, twist, and move the joint or muscle as well as you can on your uninjured side.
  • Equal Strength – The muscles around the injury match the strength and balance of the uninjured side.
  • Functional Movement – You are able to perform sport-specific movements and drills without pain.
  • Psychological Readiness – You have full-confidence in the injured joint or muscle, and are not altering your movements in fear of reinjury.

Process for Safely Returning to Sports

Our sports physical therapists use a staged approach to help you return to play, gradually moving from gentle range-of-motion exercises to low-impact conditioning and strengthening, followed by sport-specific drills.

  • Stage 1: Rest and Symptom Control – Focus on reducing acute pain, swelling and inflammation.
  • Stage 2: Mobility and Light Cardio – Begin gentle range-of-motion exercises and dynamic stretching, and incorporate low-impact cardio.
  • Stage 3: Strength and Balance – Rebuild muscle strength, joint stability and proprioception, and target symmetrical strength.
  • Stage 4: Sport-Specific Drills – Perform non-contact, functional movements related to your specific sport.
  • Stage 5: Modified Participation – Return to normal training loads, and, if playing a team sport, return to practice.
  • Stage 6: Full Competition – Clearance for complete game-day participation and high-intensity play.

Make an Appointment with Our Sports Physical Therapists in Malta, Saratoga & Queensbury

Just because you no longer feel pain, doesn’t necessarily mean you are fully healed and ready for play. To prevent reinjury and future complications, a safe return to sports requires full strength, no pain and swelling, and a structured, gradual progression through specific healing and conditioning stages cleared by an orthopedic specialist or physical therapist.
