Physical therapy is an important part of recovering after an injury or surgery, but overdoing it can actually have the opposite effect. The goal is to reduce pain and regain strength and mobility as quickly as possible, but your body also needs time to heal and adapt. Exceeding your limits can actually increase pain, inflammation and fatigue, and, ultimately, slow your recovery.

The good news is that our bodies send us signals to let us know when we’ve had enough. If you are experiencing any of these warning signs, it’s important to talk to your physical therapist so that they can adjust your rehab program accordingly.

7 Signs You May Be Overdoing It

Your body signals its limits through pain, fatigue and other physical and mental changes. Learning to recognize these cues is the key to progressing safely and effectively.

  • Sharp or Shooting Pain – Discomfort is normal during physical therapy, but sharp, shooting or burning pain during or immediately after an exercise means you should stop.
  • Pain that Lingers – Mild muscle soreness should fade within 24 to 72 hours. If pain, throbbing or swelling lasts more than two days, your tissues are overloaded.
  • Reduced Range of Motion or Stiffness – If a joint or muscle feels tighter, stiffer or harder to move after multiple sessions, your body may be using protective muscle guarding to cope with too much stress.
  • Excessive Fatigue – Rehabilitation can be tiring, but if you’re feeling completely wiped out for days after a session, you’re probably doing more than your body is ready for at this stage in your recovery.
  • Trouble Sleeping – Tossing and turning, trouble falling asleep, or waking up restless can be signs of physical stress and elevated cortisol from overexertion.
  • Dizziness or Lightheadedness – Feeling faint, dizzy or nauseous during or right after a movement is an immediate warning signal to pause and rest.
  • Mental Burnout – If you start dreading your physical therapy sessions or experience increased feelings of doubt and frustration, you’re declining motivation could be a sign of overexertion.
